Pixel 10a vs 9a: Is the $100 Upgrade Worth It?

The Google Pixel 10a and Pixel 9a are nearly identical phones, making the choice between them surprisingly difficult. Google kept the same Tensor G4 chipset, 5100mAh battery, and camera hardware (48MP main, 13MP ultra-wide, 13MP front) across both generations. The newer 10a does bring some incremental improvements: a slightly brighter display, faster charging (30W vs 23W), upgraded Gorilla Glass 7i protection, and better-sounding speakers.

The 10a measures slightly narrower and shorter thanks to a thinner aluminum frame, though it's marginally thicker to eliminate the camera bump for a flush back panel. Battery life is notably better on the 10a despite the same cell capacity, possibly due to a new modem and software optimizations. The display claims 200-300 nits extra brightness, though that's hard to perceive. Charging improved by just 4-5% in testing, meaning both phones remain slow compared to most Android competitors.

The $100 price difference is really the deciding factor here. Both phones inherit the same weaknesses: chunky bezels, sluggish charging, and performance thoroughly outclassed by cheaper alternatives. The 10a gets one extra year of software support, but the 9a delivers essentially the same experience for less money. For most buyers, the Pixel 9a remains the smarter choice.
