Google's Pixel 10a is now available for pre-order, and while it looks nearly identical to last year's Pixel 9a, there are meaningful upgrades under the hood. Both phones share the same $499 starting price, Tensor G4 chip, 120Hz OLED displays, and seven years of software support, but the 10a adds several notable improvements that make it the better long-term buy.

Display upgrades include Gorilla Glass 7i for better durability, HDR brightness bumped from 1,800 to 2,000 nits, peak brightness increased to 3,000 nits, and contrast ratio doubled to over 2,000,000:1. The 10a also gains Satellite SOS capability for emergency messaging when outside cellular coverage - a hardware-dependent feature the 9a can't match. Camera software sees new tools like Camera Coach, Macro Focus, and Auto Best Take, though the hardware remains unchanged with the same 48MP main and 13MP ultrawide sensors.

Battery life and charging are nearly identical, with both using 5,100mAh cells and 23W wired charging. The 10a does offer slightly faster 10W wireless charging versus 7.5W on the 9a, and Extreme Battery Saver extends from 100 to 120 hours. For current Pixel 9a owners, the upgrades aren't dramatic enough to justify switching, but first-time buyers or those upgrading from older models should choose the 10a for its enhanced durability, emergency features, and brighter display.
