Meta Blocks Recording When Lens Tampered

Meta has added a privacy safeguard to its smart glasses that disables the camera when the side capture LED is covered or damaged. The feature, now live on the second-generation models and slated for all future releases, auto‑detects tampering and shuts off the lens until the LED is restored.

Users who previously warned that the blinking light could be missed now have a hardware‑level check that keeps cameras from operating without visible indication. Meta also announced it will remove advertisements and online offers that promote services designed to disable or tamper with the capture LED.

For consumers, the update means a clearer visual cue and an enforced pause on the camera when the LED is not functioning. For the industry, it sets a new baseline for privacy controls in wearable devices, prompting competitors to reconsider how they signal active recording to nearby people.
