Meta's Glasses Lock Cameras if LED Tampered

Meta's newest AI glasses, the Meta Glasses, reignited anger over privacy. Users report that modders have already found ways to silence the capture LED—the visible indicator that the device is recording. Critics argue that a hidden camera could enable stalking and other abuses.

In an FAQ, Meta explained that the capture LED blinks when a photo is taken and continues while video is recorded. The light has no off switch, so everyone nearby knows when recording starts. The company added that the camera will disable automatically if the LED is blocked, a feature present since the second generation.

Meta is now pushing a mandatory update that will lock the camera until the LED is restored. The company has also begun removing ads and Marketplace posts that promote LED‑tampering services and pledged to ban accounts that advertise them, threatening legal action against remaining offenders.

The move signals Meta’s attempt to curb privacy violations while protecting its brand. For users, the update means a built‑in safeguard that may deter illicit recordings. For the industry, the enforcement could set a precedent for hardware transparency and compel competitors to integrate similar lockout mechanisms.
