Meta's efforts to prevent covert recording with its smart glasses are being undermined by simple, inexpensive stickers. Despite a mandatory software update that disables cameras if the LED recording indicator is physically broken, new accessories bypass this by subtly obscuring the light without damage. These stickers, available for around $17 for a dozen, allow just enough peripheral light to fool Meta's safety feature while rendering the LED imperceptible to bystanders.

One tested product, a two-piece sticker kit, successfully foiled the LED warning on second-gen Ray-Ban Meta glasses. A more effective clip-on cover, priced at $15 for ten, completely conceals the recording light on Oakley Meta Vanguard sunglasses. The thriving market for these bypass products highlights Meta's challenges in enforcing privacy.

Meta states that products tampering with privacy features violate their policies and is exploring ways to detect and disable such modifications. While Meta can detect footage from glasses with broken lights, these intact-bypass stickers make enforcement more difficult. Adam Mosseri has indicated that users harassing others with altered glasses will be banned, but effective policy enforcement remains uncertain.
