Google cuts Play Store fees to 10% after Epic Games court loss

Google is slashing Play Store fees for developers following its courtroom defeat against Epic Games. The company will reduce its commission from 30% to 10% for developers earning their first $1 million in annual revenue, representing a significant policy shift aimed at retaining developer goodwill.

Developers using Google's billing system face an additional 5% fee in the US, UK, and EEA. More importantly, Google will now permit third-party billing systems starting June 30 in those regions. This change addresses longstanding developer complaints about being locked into Google's payment infrastructure.

The reduced fee structure rolls out globally through 2027: Australia gets access September 30, Japan and Korea by December 31, with worldwide availability arriving September 30, 2027. Google is also launching new Games Level Up and Apps Experience programs that offer further rate reductions for qualifying developers beginning September 30.

These moves directly respond to the Epic Games lawsuit challenging Google's monopolistic practices on Android. While developers gain flexibility and lower costs, Google preserves revenue from larger apps while attempting to rebuild trust in its ecosystem.
