Android adds custom notification rules in upcoming beta

Android’s notification framework already supports channels, cooldown timers, modes and an organizer, but a new layer may arrive soon. Google is testing Notification Rules in the Android 17 beta, a feature that lets the system apply custom behaviors based on the source app or a specific contact. Early strings suggest developers can toggle silence, block or bundle alerts automatically, and gives manufacturers fresh automation hooks.

The beta exposes five possible actions: Silence, Block, Silence and Bundle, Highlights, and Highlight & Alert. While some names are self‑explanatory, “Highlights” likely introduces a visual priority cue for chosen messages. Samsung’s One UI 9 builds already contain traces of the same code, indicating the rule engine will roll out beyond Pixel devices. This could also simplify enterprise device policies and reduce the need for third‑party notification managers.

For power users, the ability to mute calls from a single number or elevate messages from a favorite contact could streamline daily workflows. By moving rule creation into the OS rather than individual apps, Android may finally offer the granular control long demanded by Android enthusiasts. Early adopters will likely test it with messaging and calendar apps first, and the feature appears set for a near‑term release.
