Android 17 adds Pause Point and 3D emojis

Android 17 arrives with two long‑awaited tweaks that could change daily phone habits. Google unveiled Pause Point, a Digital Wellbeing gate that inserts a brief delay before opening apps flagged as distracting. At the same time the OS gets 3D emojis, finally giving Android a visual depth that rivals iOS. Both features land in the upcoming Pixel update.

When a user taps a marked app, Android pauses for ten seconds, then presents optional nudges—breathing exercises, timers, personal photos or audiobook suggestions. The pause isn’t a hard lock; it merely asks the user to reconsider the impulse. Attempting to turn off Pause Point forces a full device reboot, adding friction that discourages casual bypass. It also logs each pause for later review.

The new emoji set rolls out later this year, starting with Pixel handsets before spreading across Google’s services. By giving messages a three‑dimensional feel, Google hopes to close a long‑standing aesthetic gap that many Android users complained about. Together, Pause Point and the refreshed emojis signal a shift toward more intentional, visually engaging interactions on the platform. Early adopters will notice the smoother chat experience.
