X launches Live Studio with $1M creator payouts to boost streaming

X is making another attempt to establish itself as a live streaming destination. The company is allocating $1 million to incentivize creators to broadcast on its platform, part of a renewed push that includes a new Live Studio command center for easier streaming setup and management.

The Live Studio dashboard lives within Creator Studio and provides essential tools for going live. Creators can set stream titles, upload thumbnails, schedule broadcasts, and control audience access - restricting streams to verified accounts, followers, subscribers, or making them public. The interface displays real-time metrics including concurrent viewers, geographic locations, and device types used by audiences.

Live streaming remains exclusive to X Premium subscribers, who pay $3 monthly for access. This monetization requirement reflects X's broader strategy of gating premium features behind subscriptions. The company hopes better tools and direct payments will attract more professional streamers to the platform.

Past attempts at live broadcasting haven't gone smoothly. In 2023, Ron DeSantis's presidential announcement on Spaces failed due to server issues, followed by another crash during Elon Musk's planned Trump interview. These reliability problems will need fixing if X wants to compete seriously in live video.
