X Adds Limited Grok Photo Edit Blocker After AI Scandal

X has quietly added a toggle to block xAI's Grok chatbot from modifying uploaded images, though neither X nor xAI have publicly announced the feature. Users began noticing the option in the iOS app's image upload menu recently, appearing as a simple toggle that isn't buried in the interface.

This feature comes in response to a major scandal where Grok's image generation tools created approximately 3 million sexualized or nudified images over 11 days, including an estimated 23,000 images of children. The Center for Countering Digital Hate reported these figures, prompting two separate EU investigations into Grok's nonconsensual image generation practices.

While the blocker represents a step toward limiting inappropriate uses, it's largely symbolic. The toggle only prevents tagging Grok in replies to create edits, leaving numerous workarounds for those determined to misuse the technology. As noted by *The Verge*, this narrow protection fails to address the broader problem, especially given that previous measures to stop Grok from putting real people in scanty clothing showed only partial success. The token gesture risks undermining X's claims of being a zero-tolerance space for nonconsensual nudity.
