White House app forced onto DHS phones

On June 16 the Homeland Security department received an internal memo that the White House app will be auto‑installed on every government‑issued phone they manage. The notice, cited by Politico, says the app lands on devices regardless of user consent and is presented as a single portal for presidential announcements, executive actions, livestreams and official videos for all staff and contractors.

The administration rolled out the app in March, promising live streams of press briefings and a curated feed of official social media posts, even listing current grocery prices. Government Executive reported in May that the rollout would expand to “all government‑furnished mobile phones in the executive branch,” with the FAA already slated for installation, and to standardize messaging across agencies.

Critics inside the agency warn that any pre‑installed software could act as a backdoor into secured networks, a concern echoed by a former government IT executive. With DHS leading the push, other federal bodies may soon see the same mandatory deployment, tightening the White House’s direct communication channel but raising new security questions. The move underscores the administration’s push for centralized outreach.
