White House Forces Its App onto Federal Employee Phones

The Trump administration is directing federal agencies to install The White House app on all government-issued mobile devices. The app, launched in March 2026, delivers live streams, breaking news alerts, policy updates, and a social media feed from White House accounts. The FAA confirmed its IT team will automatically push the app to all FAA-issued iPhones and iPads starting next week.

Federal CIO Greg Barbaccia sent orders to agency chief information officers asking for help with the mechanics of deploying the app across executive branch phones. Former officials, including Sonny Hashmi and David Nesting, called the move dangerous, warning that installing any app on government devices can create backdoor access to networks behind the firewall.

The app raised cybersecurity concerns early on, sharing IP addresses, time zones, and other user data with third-party services. A GPS tracking feature was removed after backlash. Critics noted the app includes overtly political messaging and a button to text President Trump with the default message 'Greatest President Ever!'. The forced installation echoes last year's governmentwide email system used for the 'Fork in the Road' resignation offer.
