Super Mario Sunshine, the 2002 platformer and follow-up to Super Mario 64, is coming to Nintendo Switch Online's GameCube library next month. Players will revisit Isle Delfino, where Mario is framed for vandalism and must clean up the island with the help of FLUDD, a sentient water cannon, while also embarking on a rescue mission.

Despite its tropical setting, Super Mario Sunshine is a divisive entry in the 3D Mario series due to its unique physics, controls, and challenging gameplay, exacerbated by an early 2000s camera. The FLUDD mechanic, while innovative, led to criticism that Nintendo strayed too far from its predecessor's formula.

This addition means all 3D home console Mario games are now playable on Switch 2. Super Mario Sunshine was previously part of the delisted Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. The emulated GameCube version will feature upscaled visuals and save states, launching on August 13. The GameCube library is accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
