Starfleet Academy sets Star Trek first-season record

Starfleet Academy has achieved what no Star Trek series has managed before: a first season without a single bad episode. The Paramount+ show, which debuted in January to skepticism from longtime fans, has delivered 10 consecutive solid outings that avoid the typical first-season stumbles that plagued previous Star Trek shows. While shows like The Next Generation and Discovery famously struggled in their early seasons, Starfleet Academy has maintained quality throughout.

Prior Star Trek series often required multiple seasons to find their footing. The Next Generation didn't hit its stride until season three, while Discovery's first season alienated fans with its dour tone and franchise changes. Even Picard stumbled badly in its uneven debut, killing off fan-favorite characters and transforming the title character into an android. Starfleet Academy breaks this pattern by delivering consistent quality from the start, though episodes like "Vitus Reflux" and "Ko'Zeine" are merely weaker rather than outright bad.

The show's success comes despite initial backlash from fans who dismissed it as "CW Trek" about "teenyboppers." Instead, the series has won over skeptics with its mix of adventure stories featuring Paul Giamatti's scene-chewing pirate villain Nus Braka, diplomatic episodes like "Beta Test" that moved Federation headquarters to Betazed, and personal character studies. With season two already filmed but renewal uncertain amid Paramount's merger with Skydance and potential Warner Bros. acquisition, Starfleet Academy's first season stands as a rare bright spot for the franchise's future.
