Even if some of the swings are half‑hearted, Paramount keeps the show feeling confident and sold on its overall product. The season remains as unafraid as usual to take risks, including a puppet episode with Jim Henson Studios and more parodies‑of‑the‑week than stock episodes.

The energy sometimes saps when the show justifies why it’s doing what it’s doing, especially with heavy gore from Alex Kurtzman and the repeated focus on Paul Wesley’s Jim Kirk. The creative team’s insistence on featuring Kirk while Anson Mount’s star power is underused feels vexing, as if the show is sidelining Mount.

Despite the flaws, there are moments that remind us why it is the best live‑action Trek of the streaming era. Episode six, in particular, is a standout thriller that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, with a subtle nod from Martin Quinn.

Season four is uneven in tone, erratic in quality, sometimes gratuitous in gore, but utterly charming. It might be a few years before we get to spend more time in this part of the future.
