ChatGPT Atlas Shutting Down This Weekend

OpenAI is discontinuing its dedicated Mac web browser, Chat GPT Atlas, on August 9. The browser will cease to function, including opening pages and supporting agentic workflows, and will no longer receive security updates.

Users are advised to export their Atlas bookmarks as an HTML file and save important pages before the deadline, as they will not transfer automatically. Cookie export options may also be available. Chat GPT conversation history will remain accessible.

OpenAI recommends transitioning to the new Chat GPT desktop app, which features a built-in browser with support for multiple tabs, downloads, logins, and extensions. For tasks requiring an existing Chrome profile or logged-in sessions, OpenAI suggests using its Chrome extension. The desktop app also offers an optional "computer use" functionality to control Safari.

Other AI browser alternatives for Mac include Comet, Dia, Opera Neon, and Aside. Anthropic is also adopting a similar strategy with Claude Code and a Chrome extension.
