Sega Drops $880M “Super Game” After Five Years

Sega announced the cancellation of its long‑shrouded Super Game project, a plan that had been in development for half a decade. The decision appeared in the company’s 2026 fiscal report and follows disappointing sales from titles like Sonic Rumble Party.

The shelved project was slated to launch in March 2026 and would have cost roughly $880 million. It was to be built on Microsoft’s Azure cloud and described in vague terms as a “game that stands head and shoulder above normal games.”

With the cancellation, Sega redirected over 100 developers from free‑to‑play efforts to reviving classic IPs—Virtua Fighter, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Crazy Taxi—aiming to boost consumer interest.

Sega’s pivot comes amid financial strain tied to its partnership with Rovio and a broader focus on film adaptations, including Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and The Angry Birds Movie 3, signaling a shift toward more reliable revenue streams.
