Google Maps CarPlay Set to Gain Gemini AI

MacRumors uncovered code inside the Google Maps CarPlay app that points to an upcoming Gemini integration. If deployed, drivers could invoke the AI assistant to fetch detailed directions, answer location‑specific queries, or even command navigation after accepting new Terms of Service on the iPhone version. The feature would extend the “Ask Maps” experience already live on iPhone. This would make hands‑free queries truly seamless.

Apple opened the door for third‑party conversational agents in CarPlay with iOS 26.4, giving Google a clear path to embed Gemini alongside existing bots like ChatGPT, Grok and Perplexity. On the phone, users tap the Gemini icon or say “Hey Google” to converse while a route is active; CarPlay would mirror that workflow once the update rolls out. Such integration also aligns with Google's broader AI push.

Because the integration code is already present, activation could happen without a major client update, meaning drivers may see Gemini support in the coming weeks. Adding a conversational layer promises more natural interaction than static voice prompts, potentially raising CarPlay’s appeal against Android Auto’s AI features. Early adopters will likely test it first. For now, the feature remains hidden but ready for release.
