Google is upgrading its in-car Assistant to Gemini, bringing natural voice control and deeper integration to vehicles with Google built-in. Drivers can now speak conversationally instead of using strict commands, ask contextual follow-up questions for navigation, and edit texts on the fly. This represents a significant evolution from Google's 2020 promise to make cars smarter over time.

The new AI integrates with specific vehicle hardware and manuals, offering customized troubleshooting. For electric vehicles, Gemini provides real-time battery updates and helps locate charging stations with nearby amenities. Texting functionality now includes message summarization while driving, addressing a common safety concern for many drivers.

The upgrade will first roll out in English in the United States through over-the-air updates. Google plans to expand to more countries and languages soon, with future capabilities including access to Gmail, Calendar, and Google Home data directly from the driver's seat. Previous AI assistants have struggled with real-world accuracy, so the actual effectiveness of these new features faces the same challenge.
