iOS 26.4 Brings ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to CarPlay

Apple's iOS 26.4 will finally bring third-party AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini to CarPlay. The update introduces voice-based conversational apps as a supported app type, allowing drivers to access AI services through the CarPlay interface for the first time. Apple is implementing a new voice control screen that will provide visual feedback for these voice-based conversational apps.

Previously, Apple restricted CarPlay to prevent driver distraction, limiting users to Siri voice controls while in their vehicles. Companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google were unable to create CarPlay apps before now. The new integration will let CarPlay users access voice-based apps like ChatGPT to ask questions hands-free, though the apps won't be able to control vehicle or iPhone functions.

There won't be a wake word option to activate a third-party app, so users will still need to open the app to use the chatbot. After an app is launched, the customizable voice control screen will give users vehicle-optimized chatbot experiences. iOS 26.4 is currently in beta and expected to see a release this spring, marking a significant expansion of CarPlay's capabilities and giving drivers more options for hands-free AI assistance while on the road.
