Proton Mail adds Gmail off‑ramp with end‑to‑end encryption

Proton Mail rolls out an expanded Easy Switch that not only imports Gmail messages but also lets users send mail from their existing Gmail address inside Proton’s encrypted interface. The move targets users uneasy about Google’s AI‑first push, offering a single pane to manage legacy inboxes while keeping Proton’s privacy guarantees intact.

Proton asserts that once the switch is complete, Google loses visibility into email activity, and any correspondence between Gmail users routed through Proton becomes end‑to‑end encrypted. The service also strips trackers, ads and spam, and migrates attachments, calendars and contacts via Easy Switch. Ongoing sync pulls new Gmail messages into Proton without granting Google access to the Proton mailbox.

Proton encourages users to replace critical logins with a Proton address before deleting their Google account, positioning the suite as a privacy‑focused off‑ramp. While Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird already handle Gmail, Proton’s promise of encrypted handoff may sway privacy‑conscious consumers. The effort marks another step in the broader shift away from Google‑centric email ecosystems.

Beyond email, Proton lets users migrate Google Photos and Drive files to Proton Drive, consolidating data under one encrypted umbrella. By bundling these tools, the company challenges Google’s dominance in personal cloud storage and could accelerate adoption of secure alternatives among users dissatisfied with pervasive data mining.
