Rivian declares CarPlay debate dead as AI reshapes vehicle interfaces

Rivian's chief software officer Wassym Bensaid told The Verge's Decoder podcast that advances in artificial intelligence have rendered the CarPlay debate moot. Bensaid argued that the shift from software-defined to AI-defined vehicles eliminates the need for Apple's infotainment system.

He explained that deep AI integration creates possibilities that make CarPlay support unnecessary. According to Bensaid, 'agentic integration' will fundamentally change how drivers interact with applications in their vehicles.

Internal customer surveys appear to validate Rivian's approach. Five years ago, CarPlay topped customer requests, and after launching the R1T and R1S, over 70 percent of owners wanted the feature. However, recent surveys show that number has dropped below 25 percent.

While the data suggests existing customers are less concerned about CarPlay, it remains unclear whether prospective buyers share this sentiment. Rivian continues to bet on proprietary software rather than adopting established platforms, betting that its AI assistant will eventually satisfy users who initially demanded Apple integration.
