Microsoft to disable Office 2019 on Mac and iPhone in July 2026

Microsoft will effectively brick Office 2019 for Mac, iPad, and iPhone users on July 13, 2026, ending the standalone suite's functionality after support officially ended in October. Users running macOS 11 Big Sur will lose nearly all features, while everyone else gets relegated to read-only mode.

Starting next summer, you can view and print existing files but won't create, edit, or save them. Microsoft calls this "reduced functionality mode," though it's essentially a forced upgrade path. Mobile users on iPadOS 16 or iOS 16 and earlier face the same dead-end treatment.

Your options are limited: upgrade to macOS 12 Monterey or later for Office 365/Office 2021 compatibility, purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription for browser-based access, or buy newer Office versions. Office 2021 loses support in late 2026, making Office 2024 the better long-term purchase with support through 2029.

AppleInsider notes many online vendors still sell Office 2019 despite its impending obsolescence. Users stuck on older hardware can use web subscriptions or consider alternatives like Apple's iWork suite or LibreOffice. Microsoft's five-year support window for perpetual licenses pushes users toward recurring subscriptions rather than one-time purchases.
