Proton Mail adds Gmail integration to ease privacy-focused email migration

Proton Mail launched a new feature that lets users connect their Gmail accounts directly within the app, pulling emails and allowing them to send messages using their Gmail address without opening Google's client. The integration aims to address the biggest barrier preventing people from leaving Gmail: their existing address being tied to countless accounts and contacts. Through the Import via Easy Switch section in settings, users can link accounts while Proton claims Google won't access Proton Mail inboxes. Proton emphasizes privacy benefits, stating the feature strips trackers, ads, and spam from incoming emails. The company also says emails between connected Gmail users can achieve end-to-end encryption when both parties use Proton Mail, preventing Google from building advertising profiles. However, Proton acknowledges this remains a transition tool rather than a complete solution. Google can still access emails landing in Gmail inboxes, even when viewed through Proton Mail afterward. The gradual rollout begins now for Proton Mail users.

This move represents Proton's recognition that convenience matters as much as privacy for mainstream adoption. Many users have wanted to leave Gmail but found migration processes too cumbersome. By offering seamless integration, Proton makes switching more practical for everyday users who aren't ready to abandon their established email addresses entirely.

The feature directly challenges Google's dominance in email by providing an exit ramp that doesn't require burning bridges. Users maintain their Gmail identity while gaining Proton's privacy protections for messages exchanged between Proton users. This hybrid approach could accelerate adoption of privacy-focused email services among mainstream consumers.
