Fastmail Migration Update – Why I Left Gmail

It’s been a few months since my post on leaving Gmail which sparked a lot of discussion on Hacker News. The quick version is that sitesi thought I picked right with Fastmail. I’m really happy with Fastmail’s value considering all I’m getting.

Inbox organization was my biggest concern. Instead of forwarding my Gmail to my new address, I started fresh with subdomain addressing. I updated my important accounts with unique or category‑based subdomains, and any mail sent to those addresses automatically moves to matching folders—no rule‑creation game.

Fastmail lets you connect up to 100 domains to your account, which was a nice bonus. Adding my blog domain increased email replies and motivated more blogging. Newly registered domains can get greylisted for a few hours, but Gmail eventually trusted my domain.

I also use masked email addresses that route to my inbox; they’re handy for services I want to block easily. The apps, docs, and overall experience have been smooth, proving the switch is easier than expected if you move to your own domain.
