Fastmail now lets users choose the EU as the primary home for their data, hosted on secure servers in Amsterdam. Previously all accounts were stored solely in the US. The new region is built by Fastmail’s own engineers, using the same high‑standard infrastructure as the US sites. Each machine’s hardware, including disk models, is specified. All locations keep data encrypted at rest in locked racks, managed in‑house, with no reliance on third‑party cloud providers. For safety, Fastmail keeps at least two copies of every user’s mail on separate servers in the primary location and a third copy in a geographically separate site.

When a user selects the EU region, the primary copy lives in Amsterdam, with replicas in the US. If the EU servers go down, connections fall back to US locations. Users in the US region keep primary and replica copies in Philadelphia or St. Louis, with fallback to the other US site. Emergency backups, logs, and certain metadata are stored in Philadelphia.

Changing region is simple via Settings → Users & Sharing → Team Settings, under Data residency. Users can move back and forth, though migrations may take longer when no copy exists yet. Fastmail offers this without a surcharge, keeping pricing fair.
