Amazon Web Services has launched its European Sovereign Cloud, built entirely within the EU to address growing data sovereignty demands. The new infrastructure offers public sector and regulated industry clients an independent cloud environment with local governance and EU-based operations.

This move responds to increasing regulatory pressure and customer demand for data residency and sovereign controls. Unlike existing AWS regions, this cloud operates under a separate legal structure with EU citizen leadership. It features dedicated security operations and sovereign-by-design architecture, including the AWS Nitro System and end-to-end encryption.

The first region opens in Brandenburg, Germany, with plans to expand into Belgium, Netherlands, and Portugal through Local Zones. This expansion supports low-latency access and strict data isolation requirements. Customers retain access to full AWS services while meeting compliance needs unique to European markets.
