PlayStation Portal Gets 1080p High Quality Streaming Mode

Sony has released a firmware update for the PlayStation Portal handheld, introducing a new 1080p High Quality mode for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. This option provides higher bitrate than the standard 1080p setting, accessible through the Quick Menu > Max Resolution. Users must restart their game session when switching modes, with Sony noting the high-quality option consumes more data than other resolution choices.

The update brings Cloud Streaming refinements, including an immediate on-screen keyboard when accessing search screens. Users can now select specific games from bundles when choosing the stream option. Notification improvements ensure game invites appear clearly during gameplay, while trophy notifications display properly with names and images, including animated notifications for platinum trophy unlocks.

Sony has also streamlined the onboarding process for new users, allowing PlayStation account creation via QR code scanning from mobile devices. The update addresses common pain points for the handheld, though users still require access to a PS5 or PlayStation Plus Premium subscription to actually use the Portal for gaming. This firmware represents Sony's continued refinement of its cloud streaming handheld experience.
