Microsoft's privacy-screen Surface Laptop brings quirky haptics to business

Microsoft launched its latest Surface Pro and Surface Laptop for Business, packing Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors and some genuinely novel features. The standout addition is an optional integrated privacy screen with anti-glare, a first for any Surface device, along with a new haptic system that vibrates during drag-and-drop actions or when windows snap into place. Three screen sizes — 13, 13.8, and 15 inches — are available.

Pricing starts at $1,300 for the 13-inch Surface Laptop for Business, with larger models and the Surface Pro beginning at $1,950. Microsoft claims graphics performance jumps up to 35 percent over the MacBook Air with M5, while battery life stretches to 23 hours on the Laptop and 17 hours on the Pro. Available today in select markets, these machines target enterprise fleets but are technically purchasable by consumers.

The privacy screen held up reasonably well in testing, obscuring content beyond roughly 40 degrees of viewing angle — enough to deter casual snoops but not a determined seatmate. Advanced Haptics extend to pen input via the Surface Slim Pen 2 and third-party apps like Wondershare Filmora, with feedback under 50 milliseconds. Microsoft is clearly betting that these productivity-focused refinements justify the premium pricing.
