Meta Buys Moltbook: AI Social Network Sparks Meta Acquisition

Meta is acquiring Moltbook, a Reddit-like social network built exclusively for AI agents, in a move that underscores the tech giant's aggressive push into artificial intelligence. The platform, created by Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, has been operational since January and gained notoriety for its bizarre premise of AI bots interacting with each other.

Terms of the deal haven't been disclosed, but Moltbook's team will join Meta's Superintelligence Labs when the acquisition closes in the coming days. Moltbook was built using OpenClaw, a tool that lets users create AI agents capable of interacting with dozens of apps. Interestingly, OpenAI recently hired the creator of OpenClaw, highlighting the competitive talent market in AI development.

The acquisition represents Meta's interest in novel approaches to connecting AI agents through always-on directories. While current Moltbook users can continue using the platform for now, the move signals Meta's strategy to integrate innovative AI agent experiences into its ecosystem. The platform's satirical nature, with its clear riff on Facebook's name and Mark Zuckerberg's persona, adds an ironic twist to Schlicht's journey from creator to Meta employee.
