Mercedes Recalls G-Wagon EVs Over Wheel Bolt Safety Concerns

Mercedes-Benz issued a recall for all 2025 G580 electric G-Class vehicles due to a risk of wheels detaching. The 3,734 affected models use wheel bolts not designed for the electric variant’s increased mass and torque, potentially causing loosening during off-road driving or wheel changes. Owners will receive mail notices starting late May, and dealers will replace bolts free of charge. The fix addresses a flaw identified in a September 2024–January 2025 analysis, though Mercedes acknowledged the risk remains “unlikely under real-world conditions.”

The issue stems from shared wheel assemblies between electric and gas-powered G-Classes, a cost-cutting measure that overlooked torque demands. While the automaker downplays immediate danger, the recall underscores challenges in adapting legacy designs for EVs. Affected owners must visit authorized dealers for the update, a process expected to take weeks given the scale.

This recall follows a 2021 safety fix for EQS and S-Class sedans, which allowed video playback while driving—a separate but notable lapse. Both cases highlight Mercedes’ struggle to balance innovation with rigorous testing as it expands its EV lineup. Consumers may question long-term reliability, especially for high-performance models priced at $160,000+.

The G-Wagon EV recall serves as a cautionary tale for automakers prioritizing rapid electrification. With off-road capability central to the G-Class brand, mechanical failures could tarnish its reputation. For now, Mercedes urges prompt action, but the incident raises questions about quality control in its premium EV segment.
