Lucid Recalls 4,000 Gravity SUVs Over Seat Belt Defect

Lucid Motors has recalled approximately 4,000 of its Gravity electric SUVs due to a seat belt anchor defect. The company informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that some second-row seat belt anchors weren't welded correctly, potentially failing during a collision. Lucid attributes the issue to a seat supplier altering its manufacturing process without Lucid's approval, forcing the company to revert to its original design. Vehicles produced after February 14, 2026, are unaffected. Affected owners will need to bring their vehicles to service centers for inspections and potential repairs involving new brackets or seats. Notably, Lucid hasn't reported any injuries related to this defect.

This recall isn't Lucid's first major issue with the Gravity SUV. Last year, the company recalled many vehicles over an airbag problem. The model has also faced persistent software glitches, though patches appear to have largely resolved those. The three-row electric SUV starts at $79,900. Lucid's financial struggles are well-documented, burning cash without significant returns, though the company benefits from substantial backing by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which has invested billions and publicly supports the company's long-term vision.

The scale of this recall is significant for Lucid. While 4,000 vehicles represent a smaller number than mass-market automakers, it constitutes nearly all Gravity SUVs built since the model's launch last year, based on reported sales figures of roughly 15,800 vehicles in 2025 across all models. This latest defect adds to the challenges facing Lucid's flagship SUV, which has faced scrutiny over quality control and execution since its introduction.
