Nintendo released a free update for Mario Kart World today, introducing a team option to its popular Knockout Tour mode. This new feature transforms the solo elimination races into group competitions, allowing players to race together in structured teams rather than individually. The update aims to add more social chaos to the chaotic racing experience that was a highlight of the game at launch.

Players can now form teams of twelve, eight, or six drivers, with CPU racers filling any empty slots. While individual performance still determines who advances or gets eliminated, scores are pooled across teammates. This creates a cooperative dynamic where eliminated drivers can spectate and cheer, shifting the focus from pure individual skill to team strategy and shared victory points.

The addition addresses a key limitation of the original Knockout Tour, which relied solely on solo competition. By supporting both local wireless and online play, Nintendo is leveraging the Switch 2's connectivity to foster more social gaming sessions. This move reflects a broader industry trend toward enhancing multiplayer modes post-launch to maintain player engagement.
