Archive of Our Own (AO3), the premier fan fiction platform, is currently offline for maintenance that could take up to four weeks to complete. The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) took the site down just after 3 AM ET, initially planning a 12-hour window, but now warns of an extended downtime. While the site's data remains intact, the cause of the outage is still unknown.
AO3 hosts millions of transformative works and serves a vast readership, making this disruption significant for the fan community. OTW engineers, who are volunteers, are working to restore the service, though they caution that even a partial return may involve temporary further outages. Recent security vulnerabilities in PHP and TLS certificates have affected other sites, but OTW has not confirmed if AO3 is facing similar issues.
The nonprofit has not provided further details on the specific maintenance required, leaving users anxious for updates.
