Kindle AI Features Hit iOS Before Older E-readers Get Them

Amazon officially announced new Kindle AI features in June 2026, bringing spoiler-free recaps and an AI chatbot called Ask this Book to reading experiences. These tools aim to keep readers immersed by providing quick refreshers on plot points and character developments without revealing future story details.

The rollout prioritizes newer devices, with iOS users in the US getting access immediately. However, older Kindle models won't receive these updates at all. Amazon confirmed that only 2024 and newer Kindle devices, plus Kindle Scribe, will support the new features. Android support arrives by end of 2026, while older Kindles remain stuck without AI functionality.

Authors and publishers have pushed back hard against the AI integration. The Authors Guild argues Amazon didn't secure licensing permissions to turn books into searchable, interactive products. They contend this creates a dangerous precedent for AI licensing in publishing, especially given Amazon's estimated 75% market dominance.

Amazon defends the features by claiming they only use book content as prompts rather than training data. The company likens Ask this Book to existing search functionality that doesn't require licenses. This controversy highlights the ongoing tension between tech innovation and creator rights in the digital publishing space.
