Samsung has reportedly abandoned plans to include a variable aperture main camera in its upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra, according to a new report from Korea. Earlier rumors from May suggested the flagship might feature a 200MP main camera with variable aperture, a move undoubtedly influenced by speculation that Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max would adopt the technology.

The Korean report states Samsung ultimately decided against using variable aperture on any device in the Galaxy S27 lineup. The reasoning centers on increased manufacturing costs and the fact that variable aperture mechanisms would make camera bumps thicker. The company concluded that the functional benefits of the feature were not significant enough for smartphone cameras to justify the extra expense, especially as every smartphone maker is already dealing with much higher DRAM costs.

This decision marks a departure from Samsung's previous experimentation with the technology. The company previously implemented variable aperture on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 in 2018 and 2019, but the feature did not continue in later models. The latest report confirms Samsung will not pursue variable aperture for the S27 series despite earlier rumors linking it to competitive pressure from Apple's upcoming flagship.
