HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1 Cable Comparison: What Streamers Actually Need

Most people overlook their HDMI cables until something breaks, but understanding the differences between HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 can save you money on unnecessary upgrades. Both standards handle 4K video just fine, but they support different refresh rates that matter more for gaming than streaming.

HDMI 2.0 delivers 4K resolution at 60Hz and has been the standard since 2013. HDMI 2.1 doubles that to 4K at 120Hz, which sounds impressive until you realize most streaming services max out at 4K/60Hz anyway. Your Netflix or Disney+ subscription won't benefit from 2.1's higher bandwidth.

Where HDMI 2.1 makes sense is gaming. Competitive players using PlayStation 5 Pro or high-end PCs can leverage that 4K/120Hz capability for smoother gameplay. HDMI 2.2 launched in June 2025 with support for up to 16K at 60Hz, but compatible hardware remains scarce and expensive.

For typical streaming setups, HDMI 2.0 cables work perfectly. The bottleneck isn't your cables—it's the content providers. Save your money until 8K content becomes mainstream and hardware prices drop.
