HDMI splitters and switches solve the problem of mismatched ports, but they serve opposite purposes. A switch lets you connect multiple source devices (like a game console and Roku) to one TV port, automatically or manually switching between inputs. This reduces wear on TV ports and cable juggling. An HDMI splitter does the reverse: it takes one source and sends the same signal to multiple displays, useful for duplicating a menu or game to several screens.

When buying, check the HDMI standard. HDMI 2.1 supports 4K at 120Hz, dynamic HDR, variable refresh rate, and ALLM, which matter for gaming. Audio features like HDMI eARC also require 2.1. For splitters, note the “lowest common denominator” issue: connecting a 1080p and 4K display forces both to 1080p unless the splitter has downscaling. Also confirm HDCP 2.3 support to avoid black screens with protected content.

Choose an active model (with its own power) for reliable 4K signals. Use high-quality, modern HDMI cables, and add extenders for runs over 25 feet. A matrix splitter combines both functions but costs more. For most home setups, a switch is more useful than a splitter.
