Ford's 2,200 HP Cobra Jet 2200 Smashes EV Quarter Mile Record

Ford Racing's Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 just set a new world record for electric vehicles, blasting through a quarter mile in 6.87 seconds at 221 mph during an NHRA event in Charlotte. This obliterated Ford's own previous EV record of 7.62 seconds, established by the Cobra Jet 1800 last September, by a full 0.75 seconds. The 2,200 horsepower beast demonstrates how far electric performance has come in less than a year.

The engineering behind this speed is remarkable. Ford simplified the powertrain by using just two motors and inverters instead of four, yet achieved 98% efficiency while cutting motor weight in half. The 900-volt architecture and 32 kWh battery recharge in just 20 minutes—well within NHRA's 45-minute turnaround rule. Unconventional for an EV, the Cobra Jet 2200 includes a clutch for instant power delivery and a multi-speed transmission that keeps the car in its ideal power band, shaving up to a second off quarter-mile times according to Ford.

Some of this technology could eventually trickle down to consumer vehicles. However, Ford and other US automakers have significantly reduced their BEV investment of late. Ford recently announced plans to reboot the F-150 Lightning as an EREV with a gas generator, while GM delayed its next-gen full-size electric trucks and SUVs—making this record-setting run a stark reminder of what electric vehicles can achieve when automakers commit to the technology.
