Apple Studio Display XDR review: 2K-nit brightness, 2K dimming zones

Apple's $3,299 Studio Display XDR is the brightest monitor I've tested, delivering 2,000 nits HDR and 1,000 nits SDR brightness. The 27-inch 5K display uses Mini LED technology with 2,304 local dimming zones to achieve exceptional contrast and minimal blooming. It's aimed squarely at creative professionals who need the best image quality possible.

Built like a standalone computer with an A19 Pro processor and 12GB RAM, the Studio Display XDR handles all image processing, HDR tone-mapping, and webcam operations internally. The included tilt-and-height adjustable stand (a $1,000 option on the Pro Display XDR) offers smooth movement but limited range. Connectivity includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports with 140W charging and two USB-C ports, though there's no HDMI.

The display covers 81% of the BT.2020 color gamut and offers 16 color profiles for various workflows. Color accuracy is excellent with a Delta E under 1, and the true 10-bit IPS panel delivers one billion colors. While it lacks Dolby Vision support, the Studio Display XDR excels at both content creation and entertainment, with surprisingly good built-in speakers and an improved 12MP Center Stage webcam.
