Apple launched Apple's MagSafe on the iPhone 12, adding a magnet ring to stabilize the Qi coil and boost charging from 7.5W to 15W. The concept quickly spread; Android makers copied it, and the Wireless Power Consortium named the open standard Qi2.

Technically, MagSafe and Qi2 are identical: both use Qi coils plus a stabilizing magnet ring. Accessories built for one will work with the other unless size mismatches (e.g., a power bank sized for the iPhone 17 may not fit a Pixel 10). Both standards have risen to 25W; the latest iPhone 17 and 17 Pro support 25W MagSafe, and Qi2.2 powers devices like the Pixel 10 Pro XL and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.

When buying snap‑on chargers, look for a 25W rating rather than the brand name. As long as the charger meets the power spec, it will charge any phone supporting the magnetic wireless standard.

Max Miller noted that Apple donated MagSafe to the WPC, making it a universal basis for Qi2, but the brand remains proprietary and requires certification.
