Masimo's ITC Complaint Dismissed in Apple Watch Patent Battle

A federal court has dismissed Masimo's complaint against the U.S. International Trade Commission, dealing another blow to the medical device company's long-running patent battle with Apple. The April 24 filing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia dismisses the case with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled. This comes after the ITC on April 17 denied Masimo's request to reinstate an import ban on the Apple Watch.

The dispute centers on Masimo's blood oxygen sensing patents, which led to an ITC ban on Apple Watch imports in 2023. Apple responded by disabling the pulse oximetry feature in the U.S. through a software update, convincing Customs and Border Protection to lift the import restriction in January 2024. While an Administrative Law Judge upheld the original ITC ruling in March, the Commission itself determined there was no basis for a second ban.

Masimo scored a significant victory in November 2025 when a federal jury awarded the company $634 million in damages. However, the latest dismissal means Apple faces no immediate risk of another sales ban. The company still cannot restore heart rate viewing on the Apple Watch itself, only on the iPhone. Masimo retains one final appeal option to the Federal Circuit, with a deadline of June 16, 2026.
