Apple claims Q1 2026 smartphone lead as iPhone 17 drives growth

Counterpoint Research reports that Apple captured 21% of global smartphone shipments in Q1 2026, the first time the company has led the market in a first quarter. The surge stems from strong demand for the iPhone 17, which pushed Apple’s volume up 5% year‑over‑year while rivals collectively slipped.

Apple’s edge comes from its ultra‑premium positioning and a tightly integrated supply chain that insulated it from the ongoing DRAM and NAND shortage. Aggressive trade‑in incentives and the pull of Apple’s ecosystem helped the brand grow in key Asia‑Pacific markets such as China, India and Japan, where competitors saw double‑digit declines.

Samsung fell to second place with a 20% share, down 6% YoY, while Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo each lost ground, leaving the “Others” category at 28% of shipments. Counterpoint warns the memory crunch could linger into late 2027, prompting OEMs to favor value over volume and lean on refurbished devices to keep budget shoppers engaged.

Google’s Nothing brand posted the fastest YoY jump at 25%, yet its volume remained too small to breach the top five. The data underscores how component constraints are reshaping strategy: manufacturers trim low‑margin models, prioritize configuration updates, and lean on refurbished units to sustain market presence as supply tightens.
