Apple consolidates relay domains, warns developers to update systems

Apple is consolidating the email domains used by its Sign in with Apple and Hide My Email services, moving new relay addresses to private.icloud.com. The shift replaces the current privaterelay.appleid.com and icloud.com suffixes that developers and providers have coded into validation, allowlist and routing rules. Apple warned that updates must be in place before rollout begins. The move aims to streamline infrastructure and improve deliverability.

The June 15 developer notice instructed teams to audit account‑creation logic, password‑reset flows, and any email‑validation libraries that whitelist the old domains. Email services were also told to revisit spam filters, suppression lists and routing policies tied to the legacy suffixes. Failure to adjust could cause legitimate verification emails to be rejected or misrouted, breaking sign‑in experiences and increase support load across development teams immediately.

Existing relay addresses will continue forwarding messages, but users creating new aliases after the change will receive private.icloud.com addresses. Developers who miss the deadline risk account lockouts, password‑reset failures, and lost revenue from abandoned sign‑ups. Apple has not set a public launch date, leaving the onus on app makers and email providers to finish their updates promptly to avoid disruption during the transition period.
