ZimaCube 2 Review: The Homelab NAS That Fixes Its Predecessor's Flaws

IceWhale's ZimaCube 2 arrives as a modest refresh of the original design, but the real changes happen under the hood. While the Intel Core i3-1215U processor and improved thermal management address major pain points from the first generation, the external design remains frustratingly unchanged — including those 2010-era screws for drive installation.

The upgraded internals make a meaningful difference for homelab enthusiasts. IceWhale doubled down on expandability with dual PCIe slots, four M.2 SSD bays alongside six HDD slots, and support for up to 64GB of DDR5 memory. However, the SSD bandwidth limitation to 800MB/s and lack of toolless drive bays feel like missed opportunities in 2024.

Zima OS 1.6.1 impresses with its extensive app store and Docker support, making installation of Home Assistant, Plex, or Tailscale straightforward compared to competitors. The web interface provides clean monitoring dashboards, though JBOD configuration remains unavailable at launch.

At $799, the ZimaCube 2 positions itself competitively against other 6-bay NAS systems while offering superior software flexibility. For users needing native 10GbE, the $1,299 Pro model adds that connectivity and 16GB of RAM. Despite its design quirks, this represents a solid evolution for DIY NAS builders.
