Google's Android passkey fix could end password manager lock-in

Google is reportedly developing passkey import and export support for Android, letting users move credentials between Google Password Manager, Bitwarden, 1Password, and other apps without rebuilding logins manually. Android Authority found a hidden interface enabling this transfer, addressing a long-standing complaint about passkeys locking users into a single ecosystem.

Passkeys replace passwords with cryptographic keys tied to biometrics, offering strong resistance to phishing and breaches. For years, Google, Apple, and Microsoft have pushed adoption, but moving passkeys between ecosystems has remained difficult. Apple already added cross-device sync, while Android users have had no comparable option.

The solution appears to rely on the FIDO Alliance's Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP), which transfers credentials securely between managers without exposing authentication data. Android Authority tested the flow with Bitwarden and confirmed it works. This gives users genuine portability rather than being trapped by whichever ecosystem they started with.
