Google Makes Gemini Notebooks Free, Adds Source Limits for All Users

Google has opened Gemini Notebooks to all users in its mobile app, removing the paywall that previously gated the feature behind Premium, Pro, or Ultra tiers. The move turns Gemini into a project hub, letting users group chats, files, and documents for research and planning across devices.

Notebooks first launched on the web in December, linking Gemini with NotebookLM to let the chatbot reference research sources. This month Google embedded the notebooks inside the Gemini interface, so conversations and files can be saved directly as sources. The sync carries over users’ existing NotebookLM notebooks to the phone.

Free users receive a 50‑source limit per notebook, while AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra tiers allow 100, 300, and 600 sources respectively. The rollout covers most regions, with European users awaiting broader availability. Google’s decision removes a cost barrier but keeps a tiered source ceiling that may push power users toward paid plans.

By opening Notebooks to all, Google positions Gemini as a comprehensive research assistant on the go, appealing to students, professionals, and casual users alike. The limited source caps signal a strategy to monetize heavy usage while offering a generous free tier. Ultimately, the feature shifts the balance between accessibility and revenue generation in AI services.
