Google merges NotebookLM into Gemini chatbot

Google has folded its AI research assistant NotebookLM directly into the Gemini chatbot, turning the side panel into a full‑featured notebook creator. Users can now launch a new notebook, attach PDFs, web links, YouTube videos or pasted text, and let Gemini index the material for instant retrieval. The move eliminates the need for a separate NotebookLM app and works for personal or professional projects.

NotebookLM debuted as a stand‑alone app last year, but Google admitted that juggling multiple sources quickly became cumbersome. By embedding the tool, the company promises a searchable repository in real‑time that can generate summaries, infographics, or audio overviews from the uploaded content. A disclaimer in the interface cautions users that the AI may produce inaccurate results and advises verification.

The full integration rolls out this week for Google AI Ultra, Pro and Plus subscribers on the web, across devices, with mobile support and free‑user access slated for the coming weeks. Consolidating research and chat functions could streamline workflows for students, analysts and developers who previously toggled between apps. Early adopters will determine whether the convenience outweighs the occasional factual slip.
