Google's NotebookLM upgrade adds web search and automated research tools

Google has upgraded NotebookLM with web search capabilities and automated source recommendations, marking a significant shift from the tool's original file-only approach. Since its 2023 debut, NotebookLM has distinguished itself by providing source-backed answers rather than broad internet responses, but users previously needed to manually collect all references themselves.

The new cloud-based infrastructure assigns each notebook a secure cloud computer, enabling background task execution and file generation beyond simple summaries. Users can now create and export PDFs, spreadsheets, charts, images, and presentations directly within NotebookLM without switching applications.

These improvements leverage Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity models to deliver more accurate responses and handle complex projects efficiently. The system can automatically locate sources on requested topics and compile research starting points, dramatically reducing the time researchers spend gathering materials.

However, the upgrade raises questions about accuracy and verification. While the automation appeals to students and professionals, Google must prove the tool provides reliable answers without constant oversight. Currently, these features are limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace customers, with broader availability planned for later.
