ChatGPT Mac Messages Plugin Raises Privacy Concerns

The latest ChatGPT for Mac version includes a Messages plugin that can search, summarize, and draft replies across a user's entire Messages history. OpenAI announced the feature for ChatGPT Work and Codex desktop users, demonstrating capabilities like catching up on conversations and sending messages with user approval.

Privacy advocates raise concerns since the plugin accesses on-device Messages history during signup, despite OpenAI claims it doesn't create message indexes and operates locally. The company previously faced lawsuits over ChatGPT's Apple Health data integration that provided dangerously wrong medical advice. A promotional video shows an "Always allow sending to this chat" option, contradicting claims that each message requires approval.

The plugin leverages macOS AppleScript and Accessibility features, explaining its Mac-only availability since iOS lacks AppleScript. Apple hasn't commented, but the forthcoming Siri AI will offer similar message search and drafting capabilities without third-party data access. Users are advised to avoid the plugin given OpenAI's history of training on copyrighted content and potential misuse of private communications.
